The Karl-GerÀt was primarily designed for destroying heavily fortified positions, such as concrete bunkers and fortresses. It consisted of two main variants: the Karl-GerÀt I (also known as the GerÀt 040) and the Karl-GerÀt II (GerÀt 041). The Karl-GerÀt I had a 60 cm (24 inch) caliber and fired massive 2-ton projectiles, while the Karl-GerÀt II had a 54 cm (21 inch) caliber and fired slightly smaller 1.8-ton shells. These shells were essentially giant high-explosive projectiles intended to cause maximum damage to enemy fortifications.
