Developed in the early 1940s, the M4 Sherman was designed to replace the M3 Lee/Grant series. It was intended to be more reliable, easier to manufacture, and more versatile than its predecessors. The Sherman was armed with a 75mm main gun, though later variants were equipped with a more potent 76mm gun. It also had several .30 and .50 caliber machine guns for defense against infantry and aircraft. The Sherman's armor was relatively thin compared to some of its contemporaries, which made it vulnerable to German tanks like the Panther and Tiger. However, its mobility and reliability compensated for its lack of heavy armor.
