Clippy is a cartoonish paperclip with large, expressive eyes and a small mouth, giving it a friendly, albeit somewhat annoying, personality.  Clippy was designed to assist users by offering tips, shortcuts, and help with various tasks. It would pop up when a user seemed to be struggling with a feature or could benefit from assistance, often asking, "It looks like you're writing a letter. Would you like help with that?"  While Clippy aimed to enhance user experience, it quickly became infamous for being intrusive and overly eager. Many users found its frequent pop-ups and suggestions to be more annoying than helpful, leading to widespread criticism.
