  During times of plague outbreaks, doctors were often employed to treat the infected or at least to oversee quarantine procedures. However, due to the limited medical knowledge at the time, they had little understanding of how to treat the disease.  Treatments prescribed by Plague Doctors were rudimentary and often ineffective. These included bloodletting, herbal remedies, and "smelling" bad odors to purify the air. The doctors would often use masks and other protective clothing to shield themselves from infection, though they didn’t understand that the disease spread through bacteria or viruses.
